Participation requirements

To participate, you will need to meet the following criteria:

Currently recruiting patients aged 65–80 in our Birmingham clinic only
If you are aged 55–75, this cohort has temporarily closed.

*Please Note: While you do not need a Study Partner/Study Companion for your first visit, you will need someone who can provide feedback on your memory. This is only necessary if you test positive on the blood test and are suitable for the study. Your Study Partner would need to accompany you to the clinic every six months. If you do not have someone who can fulfil this role, unfortunately, you will not be able to participate.

What steps are
involved to take part?

We are running this study to help us identify Alzheimer’s Disease sooner in patients – before people get the symptoms of memory loss. There are 3 steps to taking part:

Step 1

You will meet with our doctors to discuss the study and check you are a good fit for it. On this visit, if you are found to be suitable, you will have a blood test that looks for any build-up of proteins in the blood that could indicate possible Alzheimer’s Disease.

Step 2

If found to have elevated levels, we will send you for an MRI scan and a PET scan to determine whether these abnormal proteins are, in fact, due to a build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain.

Step 3

If the PET scan shows this build-up, you can decide if you would like to join the research study. Being a part of the research study would involve taking medication to stop further buildup of this plaque. In other words, this is aims to stop any progression to Alzheimer’s Disease.

How Long Do The Appointments Take?

The appointment duration varies from site to site. However, it should take up to 45 minutes per person. All that is done on this appointment is:

Hear from the doctor what the study is about
A quick telephone-based memory assessment
Finally, a blood test for ptau-217 levels, which is an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease

FAQs

The blood test in Step 1 is before having an informal chat with a doctor at our clinic. We use them to look for abnormal levels of p-tau217, which have been shown to be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease.
If a buildup of p-tau217 is found (usually less than 3% of patients will have this level), it is no guarantee of early Alzheimer’s. We would arrange for two state-of-the-art scans to determine the reason. These scans will involve a 3T MRI looking for abnormalities in the brain (e.g., a silent, benign stroke, which can be normal) and a PET scan, which will quantify the level of amyloid in the brain.
A positive PET scan would allow someone to join the trial, but of course, a patient can withdraw at any stage.
