New Service - Apheresis

A New Apheresis Clinic. Helping fight disease and support life-saving care.

We now offer this new service privately in our London clinic. Apheresis is a treatment that selectively removes or collects specific blood components to help to treat disease and support life-saving therapies.

What is Apheresis?

Apheresis is a medical procedure where blood is drawn from the body, specific disease-related components (such as inflammatory proteins, autoantibodies, or harmful lipids) are selectively removed, and the cleaned blood is returned to the patient.

Apheresis is a treatment to consider for people who are regaining their cognitive clarity after chemotherapy treatment, some people who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, and those with post-viral conditions such as long covid.

It is a targeted blood filtration, similar to dialysis, but designed to selectively remove disease-driving factors rather than waste products. Different forms of apheresis exist depending on the condition being treated, each carefully designed to remove specific unwanted elements while preserving the rest of the blood.

What is double apheresis?

At Re:Cognition Health, we offer Double Filtration Plasmapheresis (DFPP) — a next-generation plasma treatment.

  • In the first step, blood is separated into plasma and blood cells.
  • In the second step, the plasma passes through a fine filter that removes harmful proteins, lipids, and antibodies.
  • The cleaned plasma and the blood cells are returned to the body.

Unlike older methods that removed and replaced your plasma with artificial fluids, DFPP keeps your own plasma, cleans it, and returns it to your body, reducing side effects, avoiding major fluid changes, and allowing more blood to be treated safely.

Each patient’s treatment plan is individually tailored, adjusting how many sessions you might need, and how frequently. We base this on clinical goals, how you respond to treatment, and your tolerance to it.

The benefits of apheresis

There are many benefits associated with apheresis, here are a few:

  • Targets disease mechanisms directly (autoantibodies, inflammatory proteins, harmful lipids)
  • Gentler than older plasma exchange methods
  • Tailored treatment protocols for individual patient needs
  • Minimally disruptive: outpatient therapy with fast recovery
  • Applications across conditions: cognitive, cardiovascular, and post-viral disorders

How It Works

To carry out the treatment, two small tubes (needles) are placed into your veins — one to take blood out, and one to return it. They’re a bit larger than those used for a standard blood test, but most people find them manageable, especially after a simple check to make sure your veins are suitable.

Your blood flows through a clean, sterile system that gently separates it into plasma and blood cells, so the treatment can work on just the part that’s needed.

Your plasma then goes through a second special filter that gently removes the substances that may be causing problems, while keeping the useful parts. We call this double filtration.

Once filtered, your plasma and blood cells are safely returned to your body through the second tube.

Each session usually lasts between 1.5 to 3 hours. During this time, you can relax . Many people read, watch a film, or use their laptop.

This therapy is tailored to your needs: some people may only need one session (for example, before joining a clinical trial), while others may benefit from a series of treatments spaced out over time.
