Marilyn Gulland

Psychotherapist

I specialise in ISTDP, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy, and have experience using ISTDP with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), and other somatic symptoms where no clear organic cause has been identified, and where emotional factors may be connected to the underlying cause.  When physical suffering is repeatedly dismissed or misunderstood, it can feel profoundly frustrating and invalidating.  In many cases, some of these symptoms may have emotional roots that can be resolved through therapy, leading to significant, and sometimes complete relief.

Therapy that helps requires a collaborative relationship .  As we work together and build a safe, focused therapeutic relationship, the interventions I use will be designed to help us understand if your difficulties are rooted in unresolved complex emotions and to see if we can resolve them.  ISTDP aims for deep and lasting internal change, rather than simply offering coping strategies that may unintentionally maintain suffering.

Before training as a therapist, I studied law at Durham University and worked as a solicitor in the City.  This background gives me a strong understanding of the pressures, demands, and emotional costs of working in high-intensity, high-performance environments.
