Children’s mental health statistics uk

Dr Ferrin explains that approximately 66% of mental health problems in children start before the age of 14 and 75% before the age of 19.

Statistics suggest that at least 1 in 10 children suffer from a recognisable mental health disorder.

An additional 10-15% of children may have mild symptoms, which are treatable and likely to improve if appropriate support is available.

Mental health problems affecting children

Mental health is a growing concern in society amongst children and adolescents.

An early diagnosis and treatment is essential to ensuring the best prognosis. The longer the condition persists, the more severe it will become.

Factors affecting mental health and wellbeing

Genetics, environmental circumstances or traumatic events (often a combination) all contribute to mental health disorders. These include conditions such as: Autism, ADHD, OCD, addiction, anxiety, depression, ODD and other general psychotic disorders.

Improving children’s mental health

In the interview, Dr Ferrin explains the importance that good sleep, a good diet and how stress can affect the brain and the mental health of children.
