Healing Trauma and Anxiety with EMDR Therapy: A Personal Approach

by Press Office

Shikainah Champion is a London-based EMDR therapist dedicated to helping individuals process trauma and anxiety so they can reclaim their emotional well-being. She offers therapy both in-person and online, creating a safe and accessible space for healing, wherever clients may be.

She specialises in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a powerful psychological therapy designed to help people work through traumatic experiences or anxiety-based issues that continue to affect their day-to-day lives. “EMDR helps the brain do what it couldn’t do at the time of the trauma, process and release it, so it no longer has a grip on your present,” says Shikainah.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is grounded in the idea that the body keeps the score. When someone experiences something overwhelming, their brain may not be able to process it in the usual way. These unprocessed memories can then linger in the body and mind, surfacing as anxiety, emotional distress, or physical symptoms.

EMDR helps bridge this gap by guiding the brain through a safe, structured reprocessing of the traumatic memories. As a result, the emotional charge around those memories is significantly reduced, or even eliminated, allowing individuals to move forward without being held back by the past.

“EMDR helps the brain do what it couldn’t do at the time of the trauma, process and release it, so it no longer has a grip on your present,”

Who Can Benefit from EMDR?

Shikainah works with clients aged 16 and over, supporting those who have experienced trauma or are living with persistent anxiety. Recognising the importance of cultural and linguistic comfort, she offers therapy in English, Urdu, Hindi, and Tamil. “Therapy should be a space where you feel completely at ease, down to the language you use to express your emotions,” she explains.

Whether the trauma stems from a single distressing event or a series of unresolved experiences, EMDR offers a way to release their emotional weight. Clients often report improved sleep, increased energy, renewed motivation, and a sense of emotional freedom following successful treatment. “It’s incredibly powerful to see someone realise they’re no longer a prisoner of their past,” Shikainah adds.

Why This Work Matters

For Shikainah, therapy is more than a profession, it’s a calling rooted in transformation. Her greatest motivation comes from witnessing the emotional journeys of her clients and the renewed lives they’re able to lead. “Seeing someone arrive weighed down by emotional pain, and then watching them rediscover joy, purpose, and peace, that’s what makes this work so meaningful to me,” she says.
